The Founding of 91µ¼º½

91µ¼º½ started with a dream. In 1971, a small group of educators dreamed of creating an innovative graduate program that would serve working adults — from all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds — who did not have access to higher education.

That program was called the Institute of Open Education (IOE) which enrolled almost 100 students in its first class in July 1971. Later it became a part of the Antioch University Network.

In 1981 it became an independent private non-profit educational institution named 91µ¼º½.

The Growth of 91µ¼º½

In 1986, 91µ¼º½ opened its main campus in greater Boston, expanding its presence and programs in the area. In 2000, it established regional centers in California, Puerto Rico and other locations.

In March 2020, 91µ¼º½ acquired the New England College of Business and Finance, which had been educating adults since its founding in 1909 as the Boston chapter of the American Institute of Banking. In 2021, NECB was rebranded as 91µ¼º½ Global, the school's online division.

91µ¼º½ celebrated its golden anniversary in June 2021.

For more than 50 years, the College has maintained its commitment to open enrollment. Its alumni now number over 39,000.

On July 1, 2024, 91µ¼º½ was acquired by Bay Path University. This date marks the joining of two like-minded institutions. Building on a common mission of providing innovative and accessible education to students from all backgrounds, working adults, and first-generation learners, this powerful alliance will enhance our academic community and broaden students' educational horizons and career opportunities. The full integration of 91µ¼º½ into Bay Path University is underway and is expected to be completed in fall 2026.
